Memorial Day Weekend on Delmarva: Summer Starts Here

Memorial Day weekend is when Delmarva flips the switch.

One week, the beach towns are easing out of spring. The next, the boardwalk lights are glowing, the orange crushes are flowing, the lifeguard stands are back in place, and suddenly everyone remembers why they count down to summer all year.

Across the Delmarva Peninsula, Memorial Day weekend is more than the unofficial start of beach season. It is a mix of remembrance, small-town tradition, live music, family fun, and that first real taste of summer energy along the coast. From Ocean City to Berlin, Bethany to Fenwick, Lewes to Dewey, there is plenty happening if you are headed to the shore.

Here are a few ways to make the most of Memorial Day weekend across Delmarva.

Start with the reason for the weekend

Before the beach chairs, boardwalk fries, and sunset drinks, Memorial Day is a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to the country. Several Delmarva towns are holding ceremonies and community events throughout the weekend.

Berlin Memorial Day Parade

Berlin’s Memorial Day Parade is one of those events that feels exactly like a small-town holiday should. The parade takes place on Monday, May 25, with floats, music, food, vendors, games, yard sale tables, and a community gathering at Dr. William Henry Park on Flower Street.

The parade begins at 11 a.m., and Berlin Main Street notes that the event honors veterans in partnership with the Town of Berlin and the Berlin Community Improvement Association.

Ocean City Memorial Day Ceremony

Ocean City’s Memorial Day Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, May 24, 2026, at 1 p.m. at North Division Street and the Boardwalk. It is a fitting setting: ocean behind you, boardwalk around you, and a community pause right in the middle of the season’s opening weekend.

Rehoboth Beach Memorial Day Ceremony

In Rehoboth Beach, American Legion Post 5 hosts its annual Memorial Day commemoration at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand on Monday, May 25, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Fenwick Island Memorial Day Ceremony

Fenwick Island’s Memorial Day Ceremony offers a quieter way to mark the holiday near the southern end of Delaware’s beaches. It is a good option for visitors staying in Fenwick, Bethany, or North Ocean City who want to take part in a respectful local ceremony without the bigger crowds.

Bethany Beach Memorial Day Service

Bethany Beach wraps its Poseidon Festival weekend with a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 25, at 11 a.m., led by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7234. It is a meaningful close to a weekend that blends ocean fun with community tradition.

Bethany Beach goes full Poseidon

Bethany Beach is not easing into summer quietly.

The town’s Poseidon Festival brings a full weekend of family-friendly coastal fun, with ocean education, entertainment, music, first responder events, and beach-town energy built around Bethany’s seaside setting.

On Sunday, May 24, the festival includes a First Responder Meet & Greet from 5:30 to 7 p.m., followed by the Chad Frick Band at 7:30 p.m. Then on Monday morning, the town shifts into Memorial Day mode with the VFW service at 11 a.m.

This is a great pick for families who want something more than just beach time — but still want everything to feel relaxed, walkable, and coastal.

Ocean City gets its summer buzz back

Ocean City on Memorial Day weekend is exactly what you expect it to be: busy, bright, loud, nostalgic, and fully awake.

The boardwalk is moving. Restaurants are humming. The beach is filling in. Mini golf, arcades, rides, shops, bars, seafood spots, and late-night slices all come roaring back into the rhythm of summer.

OceanCity.com lists Memorial Day celebrations across May 23–25, 2026, and Central Reservations describes the weekend as the moment when shops and restaurants are open, the beaches are busy, and OC gets its “buzz” back.

If you are heading to Ocean City, build in time for the classic stuff: a boardwalk walk, Thrasher’s fries, a ride or two, a bayside sunset, and maybe one of those “we’ll just stop in for one” moments that turns into a full night.

Dewey Beach is ready to be Dewey Beach

Dewey does not need much of an excuse to feel like summer, but Memorial Day weekend gives it one anyway.

By day, it is beach time, bay time, and the start of lifeguard season. The Town of Dewey Beach’s 2026 information guide notes that lifeguards are on duty from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and parking rules are back in full summer mode, with fees in effect daily from May 15 through September 15.

By night, Dewey becomes Dewey: live music, bayfront drinks, late-night food, and that unmistakable “first big weekend” atmosphere. It is a great place to kick off summer if your weekend plan includes equal parts beach towel and band schedule.

Lewes keeps it classic

Lewes is the move if your ideal Memorial Day weekend has a little more history, a little more charm, and a little less chaos.

The Lewes Chamber’s 2026 calendar lists a Lewes Memorial Day Parade with Monomoy at 11 a.m. on May 25, sponsored by American Legion Post 17. The weekend also lines up with seasonal activities around town, from historic sites and boat-friendly views to relaxed dining and walkable streets.

It is the kind of place where summer starts with a parade, a slow stroll, and maybe a cone or a crab cake before heading back toward the beach.

A few smart Memorial Day weekend tips

Memorial Day weekend is fun, but it is also the first major test of summer patience. A little planning goes a long way.

Leave earlier than you think. Thursday evening and Friday afternoon can get heavy fast, especially if you are crossing the Bay Bridge or heading down Route 1.

Make dinner plans now. If you want a Saturday night table in Rehoboth, Bethany, Dewey, Fenwick, Lewes, or Ocean City, do not wing it unless you are comfortable eating at 4:45 or 9:30.

Check parking rules before you go. Summer parking rules are active in many beach towns. Dewey’s parking fees, for example, are in effect daily from May 15 through September 15.

Bring layers. It may be summer in your heart, but May evenings at the beach can still get breezy.

Build in time to wander. The best Memorial Day moments are not always on the schedule. Sometimes it is the first boardwalk walk, the first ice cream stop, the first sunset over the bay, or the first time someone says, “I forgot how much I missed this.”

Summer starts now

Memorial Day weekend on Delmarva is part tribute, part tradition, and part full-speed sprint into summer.

It is beach towns shaking off the quiet season. It is flags, parades, music, boardwalk lights, family traditions, packed patios, and that first real feeling that the season has arrived.

So whether you are heading to Ocean City, Berlin, Bethany, Dewey, Fenwick, Lewes, Rehoboth, or somewhere in between, this is your cue.

Pack the sunscreen. Check the event schedule. Make the reservation.
